Collar chokes in Middletown
Mersh and I went to MDSC on Tuesday night and had a good time. I was guest teaching at Chris’s dojo for gi night. I covered a handful of my favorite collar chokes.
I started w/ warm-up drilling closed grd to scissor sweep and cross collar (palm up/palm down) from mount. Once we had a bit of sweat going we moved to side position escape to re-guard but on the way picked up another cross collar choke…finishing w/ a spin under the guy like doing an armbar and then kicking his base out when he bulls into you. (a cool little finishing trick I picked up at a Keith Owen seminar a few months ago).
After cross collar chokes I moved to baseball bat and spinning chokes both starting from kneeride. And then on to attacking a guy who turtles up on you. I really like the options from going after a turtled up opponent. Breaking him down w/ a wrestlers twist and then grabbing the collar for clock choke or rolling into a rear sliding choke/bow & arrow. All good. Lastly, I transition on the turtle to sprawl position where the guys learned the rolling collar choke and the rolling T choke.
Mersh and I finished the night w/ a bit of light sparring. I’m glad Chris invited us down as it is always great to see them and train w/ good BJJ players. I’m signing off now and getting ready to head out to Lake George for a long 4th of July weekend. I hope everyone has a safe and fun holiday. Jeff
