Mersh is the type of guy who always pushes himself. He loves the challenge of competing and is my most active student on the tournament scene. Although he had a few aches and pains last week that might hv changed his plans…he got up Saturday and headed east.

Mersh recently turned 60 and as usual didn’t have many fellow 60 year olds at the tourni. So they bumped him down to the 40-50 group. No problem for Mr. Mersheimer. He won his first match and then after a great effort took the silver medal. However, regardless of the prize…Mersh performed his best BJJ yet under the pressure.

Nice job Mersh!

Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (BJJ) was founded on the principle that a smaller person can defend against (or defeat) a larger opponent with technique, timing, and leverage. BJJ is the martial art perfectly suited for women who would need to fight off a stronger, male aggressor.

Our academy is made up of a great group of people. Most are in the 30-40 age range, both men and women, and all doing BJJ for fun. This is not a competition school so the vibe on the mat is friendly. You won’t attend a single class without either getting help from a fellow student…or later on giving help to a newer member.

And if you also happen to enjoy cardio kickboxing we do that as well. Each belt cycle (approx 3 months) the curriculum will cover stand up moving (footwork), kicking, striking, and takedowns. We drill stand-up techniques with partners and training pads.

Giroux BJJ is located in Glastonbury, CT. Easily accessible from I84 and Rte2. Students come in from surrounding towns like East Hartford, Wethersfield, Portland, Manchester, and Vernon Rockville. Come on down to watch or try out a few classes. Everyone gets a FREE two week membership…so there isn’t any obligation to see if BJJ is for you. Memberships are month-2-month (no long term contracts) and you will recieve a FREE training kimono on sign up.

Don’t wait…give a call to ask your questions and then get on the mat! Train safe. Call 860.633.1466 and ask for Jeff.

I co-hosted the seminar w/ Rob Magao at his dojo (Bushido BJJ) for the second time and once again everyone left w/ a bag full of priceless adjustments, new tricks, and smiles. Thanks to Marcio, Brad, and Tiago for making the trip up to teach. And thanks to everyone who supported the seminar. From our studio we had John, Big Chris, Mersh, Rich, and Stephany.

The seminar began w/ a warmup in Ginastica Natural exercises. Then we jumped up and drilled a very cool tripping takedown to side control. Marcio covered 4 variations of side position with a variety of chokes and armbars in each. I won’t go into too much detail here but will be going way into them over the next few weeks at my classes.

Train safe!

Toby now wears a shiny new blue belt! After training weekly for over a year he is a proud member of the blue belt rank. We had a packed class on Monday where he rolled for 60 solid minutes against fresh partners. Toby demonstrating great BJJ fundamentals – survival and escaping. Yep, the first part of the test is to demonstrate defense. The next part is done over a few weeks where I will watch Toby demonstrate the entire white to blue belt curriculum of techniques (statically).

Thanks to Gerry Navarra for guest teaching this week. Gerry trains/teaches at Bushido BJJ but pops into our studio to work out. This week we all enjoyed learning a few solid foot sweeps – ko soto gari, and ko uchi gari. Gerry is a black belt in judo, jiu jitsu, and holds a 4 stripe purple belt in BJJ. Oh yeah, he is also a wrestler and the coach for Manchester High. So he know his grappling!

After a great warm up in Ginastica Natural (a combination of yoga and BJJ movements) we moved into solo drilling of the foot sweep. Then we started working with partners on ko soto gari. Next we worked a ko soto gari to single leg (if the sweep fails) combo. And lastly we worked on ko uchi gari which to me is similar to a far leg ankle pick. Gi gripping/fighting was touched on. Then we finished our class w/ 20-30 minutes of standing randori. Totally awesome!

Here are a few youtube links to a famous judoka, Keiji Suzuki hitting foot sweeps in competition.

Ko Soto Gari 1

Interested in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu in CT? We train at Giroux BJJ located at 160 Oak Street, Unit 210, Glastonbury, CT 06033. We are BJJ for Central Connecticut. Our club is focused on fundamentals and we train with a laid back attitude and loads of personal attention. BJJ is my opinion the best martial art/sport for fitness and self defense. NOTE – I am slightly biased. But don’t take my word for it…come on in and try BJJ free for 2 weeks! 860.633.1466

Yeah…I’m still a bit sore as I write this post. Not from injuries but from tired muscles. Last night was our first open mat for purple belts and above. Rob from Bushido BJJ master minded the idea (although last minute police work kept him from attending and we missed having him). I know it was a hit w/ the guys who attended. Great idea Rob. Thanks to Brad and guys at Plus One for spreading the word and supporting it.

The idea is to cross train w/ area schools and build camaraderie every few months. Mission accomplished. I hosted the first event during my Wed evening class so we had some white and blue belts out there as well. But in the end I counted 6 purple belts and 1 advanced brown belt. I rolled with almost everyone and loved it. Very technical, easy going grappling practice for about an hour and a half of actual sparring time. Nobody was out to kill anybody and everybody got to work w/ guys who have different games that varied the spectrum.

Looking forward to the next one. Train safe! Jeff
